Plan Description:

To provide basic educational materials, such as books and stationary to students in rural schools throughout Sri Lanka. It is hoped that roughly 3-6 books will be provided to each child at a school. To ensure that the development of the project is managed throughout its entirety, books will be collected and presented in person to the school during visits back to Sri Lanka.

I will be keeping a blog about the progress of this project found through:

My Big reasons are:

The Story:

A few years ago, I travelled to Sri Lanka. A cousin of mine, who is a teacher at a rural school in the south of Sri Lanka told me of the situation of some students who attend her school, as being unable to afford exercise books and other resources.

This is where the inspiration for this project stems from and I hope to make a difference in the lives of these students by providing the basics for their education.

The Aim:

“What ever you do in life will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it anyway”- Gandhi

To put it simply, the aim of the project is to provide exercise books to children at rural schools in Sri Lanka.

Education is the vital component to ensuring a better life in developing countries. But for some children in countries like Sri Lanka, tools such as exercise books can be hard to afford.

My goal is to provide exercise books and other stationary to these children to ensure that they have an equal chance to learning and life

My plan will be a success when:

OBJECTIVE

To collect 2,000 exercise books (64pg A5 lined books), pens and penclis by the end of 2013

Initial goal of the project is to donate exercise books to all students at a school in Waligama, Sri Lanka. At the school there is just under 400 students, and it is hoped that each student will receive 5 books each, adding to a total of 2,000 books.

Current Book Count:
Currently I have been able to collect 500 books, a quarter of the final amount. The date by which I hope to have all 2,000 books is end of 2013 (the date at which I will be travelling back to Sri Lanka).

If I am able to make this milestone, the project will be developed further. To ensure that the project is sustainable, I would love to create a library within the school.
