Plan Description:

25/01/2012 - 19/01/2013 I am on a 12 month mission around Australia to raise $1million for cancer research. Cancer effects everyone either directly or through a loved one and current statistics show that one in two people will get cancer in their life. As a group, we can work towards improving the current research options by raising funds for research. During my self funded trip, 100% of all funds raised will go to research. Every donation that will be made will be automatically directed to the donors home state Cancer Council, and the money will then be distributed amongst research grants that are aimed at combating all cancers.   My goal, is to support ten research grants for a full year. This trip is also about inspiring hope and showing people that there is an amazing life after cancer.

My Big reasons are:

A two times Hodgkin’s survivor, during my two bouts of cancer, I have endured 27 chemotherapy sessions, 48 radiation treatments, 3 operations, one stem cell transplant, 6 weeks in hospital, 1 week in ICU, multiple blood transfusions, hundreds of blood tests and the list goes on.  There are things that are different within my body and I may not be as strong as I was before, but my spirit is strong, stronger than ever.   I didn't need a wake up call to realise that life is a gift and you only get one chance at it, but I needed a wake up call to give back to the world and people in it, that give me so much. Thank-you for taking an interest in my passion, and for joining me on my cruise for a cure.

My plan will be a success when:

We hit our one million dollar target for fundraising. I am able to inspire ordinary people to do amazing things.

My plan success story

1. Now you’ve marked your plan a success, what about it makes you most proud?

After travelling over 38,000 kilometres and hosting 115 fundraisers $86,000 has been raised for the Cancer Council. Whilst it is a far cry from the $1million mark, it has been the most rewarding journey and I can honestly say that I did my absolute best. On top of the fundraising I have also had a lot of success with media, as I was in almost 40 Newspapers, 3 National Magazines, countless radio interviews, 3 news reports, Hotseat Millionaire & invited onto Mornings.

2. What challenges did you face on your journey and what have you learned?

There were so many challenges. Fundraising is a huge challenge. You are required to put yourself out there, ask complete strangers for money without knowing anything about their personal situation, and you are not necessarily giving them something tangible in return. Not to mention, there are so many worthy charities out there, and many people are financially exhausted. To begin with, I had much greater expectations of what I would be able to achieve, especially with corporate sponsorship. Which I didn't have too much success with. My recommendation for people embarking on a similar fundraising adventure is to have something to sell and you will be a lot more successful. Try and get amazing raffle prizes and you should have great success.

3. What are some ways that PlanBig has helped you?

PlanBig has been amazing. Especially Sarah Gardner and Catt Miller, who suggested the site to me. Assistance with media has been absolutely amazing and I have learnt so much. The PlanBig team have so many great ideas and constantly inspired me. Assistance from other planners has been great too, finding out ways to operate more effectively and how to get things done. Thank-you.
