Plan Description:

ArtAbility® is an annual visual arts exhibition for people living with a disability from culturally diverse backgrounds. It gives artists a high-profile platform from which to exhibit their works, increasing confidence and a sense of identity as an artist, as well as creating a platform from which discussion about diversity can take place within the community.

My Big reasons are:

ADEC is motivated to run ArtAbility® for many reasons. We know that this program restores a sense of confidence and identity to many people who were born with or diagnosed later in life with a disability, as well as their family and/or carers who can sometimes lose hope that the person with the disability may have a bright future. It allows the artists to identify as artists rather than as "a disabled person". This exhibition creates a high profile platform from which these artists can launch their careers, which many have gone on to do after exhibiting in ArtAbility®, launching their own private exhibitions or showing works in other community exhibitions. ADEC is also inspired and motivated to continue running ArtAbility® as it creates a platform for discussion about tolerance and diversity within the greater community, as well as show-casing the contribution that people living with a disability from culturally diverse backgrounds can make to society as a whole.

My plan will be a success when:

ArtAbility® runs soley on sponsorship and government funding, which means that without support, it's success cannot continue. We will know ArtAbility® is a success when we have reached our target funding amount of $40,000 which will enable us to continue the program into 2013 and it's 9th year. ArtAbility® will also be a success when it is a household name, and people from not-for-profit organisations, community groups, disability and culturally diverse groups, as well as art lovers and the general community are aware of the exhibition.

My plan success story

1. Now you’ve marked your plan a success, what about it makes you most proud?

I am most proud of the fact that ArtAbility continues to showcase the work of up and coming artists of all ages from all over Victoria

2. What challenges did you face on your journey and what have you learned?

Budgeting challenges, time management, dealing with the anxieties of getting everything 'just so'. I have learnt to do things early, delegate to volunteers and to relax and enjoy the process as much as possible.

3. What are some ways that PlanBig has helped you?

PlanBig helped us by helping to get the word out about our project.
