Update from Juliette : I'm also chatting to a stack of people at the moment who are also actively mapping their own local areas. We are setting up collaborations and brain storming lots. Its just so inspiring to chat to other people working in the same area as you are - I highly recommend it to others if they need a move along! The best bit about it is listening to different ideas and points of views of issues that crop up. Love it!

Update from Juliette : This week I've been chatting to several fabulous people on the technical side of this project namely Sharon from Flavours Crusaders and Tammy B from Learn to Build Apps. Its been really exciting to get the wheels turning on that aspect of the project. But still alot of background work and resarch to churn out!

Update from Juliette : Things are going really well (although I know it seems to be a bit quiet on the oustide, things are humming away on the inside). Since starting this project alot of people have approached me to be involved and to let me know that they have already started thier own maps. Although I was upset at my lack of originality at first, I'm now really excited to be able to collaborate with so many people and have so much information available already! So now I'm putting my energy into making this project more than just a google map of information. I want to breathe life into it by bringing it out of the web and into other mediums such as Iphone apps and a published form. So watch this space because alot is going on!

Julia S (Community Manager) Hi Juliette, that sounds great. It's awesome to hear that so many people have started their own maps and you have the opportunity to collaborate with them. Looking forward to seeing the GLOBAL food map! :)

Juliette Thanks for your support Julia

Julia S (Community Manager) My pleasure.

Jennifer Murphy My friend is an environmental scientist, and I showed her your project. She was really excited, not so much in the mapping side, but more in how you are creating opportunities for people to change their perspective and teaching and encouraging a culture of giving/sharing ... being concerned beyond self and thinking about the bigger picture. Jen

    5.   Juliette

Jennifer Murphy Sorry, meant to add that she also thought the mapping side was kewl too ... but she was more excited about the bigger picture. Jen

    6.   Juliette

Juliette Hi Jen - Thanks so much for the feedback. I'm so flattered that you are showing my plan around to your friends! The bigger picture impact of this funny little project does have a fabulous feel. Its nice to hear that other people are getting excited about that part of the project as well.

    7.   Juliette

Jennifer Murphy Oh, she was jumping up and down about it ... firstly she didn't know that PlanBig existed, and secondly, that there were people who were doing this sort of thing - very excited!! I think it's given her a whole new train of thought!! Grin ... Jen

  4.   HWDYW?

Advice from HWDYW? to Juliette : Hey Juliette - perhaps you should connect with Tammy (www.planbig.com.au/Learn-to-build-mobile-apps) as she wants to build iPhone Apps for people. Maybe you can help one another? She might be able to build you a simple app that (for example) will allow people with iPhone/Android phones, to take a photo with their phone and auto upload it to a map. The app should easily be able to read your location via GPS - longitude/latiude using Google Maps. So it should be a fairly seamless and easy way for the end-user to interact with Urban Food Maps. You can also have a 'Whats near my location' on your phone (via the app). So when you are out and about you could receive alerts of new patches near you that have just been added - or just a list of past patches. One other idea - you should perhaps also check out www.livelocal.org. I know a couple of people behind this so might be able to connect you.

Juliette Hi - thanks so much for the thoughtful response. I will get in touch with Tammy, great idea. There are alot of people moving and shaking in this area so I'm hoping to work with as many as I can in order to get some real traction in this area.

Update from Juliette : Back in Newcastle this week and I can't get over how many citris trees have come into full bloom. I need to change my image to one with oranges or lemons growing in it! I can't help but be inspired by nature, how perfect that it creates a fruit to keep all of those nasty colds away during 'cold season'. So clever!

Update from Juliette : Urban food mapping is going really well. Started mapping Sydney last week with the harbour side suburb of Neutral Bay. It will be a slow process as I don't live there but I'm hoping that once its started others will chip in and help me out! Check out updates at www.urbanfoodmaps.com

Charlotte Hey Juliette! Wanna be in my ebook about optimism and environmentalism? I run www.happyzine.co.nz. If you're keen, answer any one of these questions: * Have you used the power of visualization to help create positive environmental change? If so, can you explain how? * Do you have any thoughts on the importance of maintaining life balance as an environmentalist, and how do you personally keep the balance between your personal life and your work? * Do you have any specific models of communication that you find useful? Can you explain how to use this technique and provide one example of how it’s come in useful? * Do you believe in the power of focus aka: the law of attraction? If you do, can you explain how you apply this as an environmentalist? * Do you have a mentor who has inspired you to reach higher and take your dreams for the planet further than you would have without their influence? * Do you enjoy your work? How do you ensure that you continue to have a good time while you create positive ripples of change for the planet? and email me charlotte@happyzine.co.nz with your response.

The IF Project Hi! The first issue of the online magazine I'm starting (see my plan) will contain an article on food poverty - can you send your contact emails to theIFProjecteditor@gmail.com so I can put you in touch with the journalist directly? This will be a great way to share your views on the food system and how urban cities are impacting on them, and also give your plan more exposure in the process! Cheers and good luck with your plan! Jane x
